Alex Anderson - Founder of Re-Entry Theater of Harlem

Alex Anderson

Founder & Executive Director

Alex Anderson, founder and director of the Reentry Theater of Harlem (RTH), launched the initiative in 2020 to empower returning citizens in crafting their own path to a better life post-incarceration. As a returning citizen himself, Alex brings a unique and deeply personal perspective to his work, understanding firsthand the challenges and opportunities that come with reintegration.

During his incarceration, Alex pursued education with unwavering determination, earning a high school diploma and a Bachelor of Arts degree from Syracuse University. This commitment to personal growth and transformation didn't end with his release. Following his return to the community, Alex obtained a Master of Social Work from the prestigious Silberman School of Social Work at Hunter College, alongside certifications in CASAC (Credentialed Alcoholism and Substance Abuse Counselor) and Restorative Justice.

The seeds of RTH were planted in 2009 when Alex experienced a profound transformation at Ritual4Return, an experience that opened his eyes to the healing power of the performing arts. This pivotal moment inspired him to channel his passion for theater into creating a space where others could experience similar breakthroughs. Through RTH, Alex has created an innovative program where theater serves as a catalyst for healing, self-discovery, and empowerment.

Today, RTH stands as a beacon of hope and opportunity, changing lives and providing a vital platform for reentry success. Under Alex's visionary leadership, the organization has become a transformative force in the community, offering returning citizens a safe space to reclaim their narratives, rebuild their confidence, and reconnect with their purpose.

Through theater, we don't just perform—we transform. Every returning citizen deserves the opportunity to write a new chapter, to reclaim their story, and to build a better life. That's what RTH is all about.
